Padsicles - How to make them and why

Writer's picture: Courtney StollCourtney Stoll

I never thought that I would require the use of a frozen pad, let alone numerous maternity pads stuck together with a frozen pad on top. Sounds crazy right? Yet it was a life saver.

Having a vaginal birth, while recovery is not as onerous as a c-section recovery, it has its challenges. While i was pregnant I watched a video on how to make padsicles and I thought, hmm, I wonder if I will need them. The answer is definitely YES. In fact it is the number one item I recommend you ensure you have for your hospital stay. It helps with comfort and swelling.

Wondering how to make them? Well buy a packet of maternity pads (any brand will do). You will need the following:

  1. Maternity pads

  2. Witch Hazel (available at your grocery store)

  3. Lavender oil (optional)

  4. Aloe Vera spray (optional)

Just open up a pad, sprinkle a dash of witch hazel on it then fold it back up and place it in a zip lock bag and store in the freezer! You can add a dash of aloe vera and lavender oil for smell if you would like but it isn't necessary. You will go through quite a few (particularly if the hospital does not provide any).

If you are at a private hospital, they should have frozen articles in the freezer that you can use. If you are public patient, I would recommend making some and putting them in your hospital bag, then when you arrive, ask them to place it in the freezer. You won't be sorry!
